Misuse

According to Myers et al. (2003:367) over-­‐the-­‐counter (OTC) and prescription medicine misuse places a burden on health and social services in South-­‐Africa.

Analgesic misuse is most often accounted for by the use of codeine-containing medicines, many of which are available over the counter

The average medication intake per migraine patient per day is 3 to 4 tablets and in 75,2% of the cases these patients abuse simple analgesics – isolated or in combination with other substances

(Krymchantowski, 2003:44).
